A recent study was conducted to examine the relationship between patients hospitalized with Covid-19 and their Vitamin D levels. 75% of the people hospitalized had Vitamin D deficiency. Also, 85% of those patients required ICU care.

In addition, a study was conducted in Europe, where Vitamin D deficiency is common in northern countries, especially during the winter months. This study found that those who had higher rates of Vitamin D deficiency were more likely to be infected and die from Covid-19 (3).

A third study was conducted over a 6 week period. It examined 2 groups of patients. One group was positive with Covid-19 and asymptomatic. The other group was positive for Covid-19 and severely ill in the ICU. The study found that the second group that was in the ICU were more likely to have Vitamin D deficiency. The death rate was much higher for those who were Vitamin D deficient as well.

You may be wondering what the relationship is between Vitamin D and Covid-19. Well, Vitamin D can promote antiviral immunity in the body. It can block viral entry and slow down viral replication. Vitamin D also promotes autophagy. Autophagy is the the body’s way of cleaning out damaged cells, in order to regenerate newer, healthier cells.
